In 2006 MMA began working with Walmart (the world's largest retailer). Since that time, MMA has grown significantly with this client and is now responsible for a large amount of special projects in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region. Along with special projects, MMA is also handling a significant number of prototypical new constructions, take-over projects as well as multi-levels with attached parking garages. MMA is an integral part of project development from pre-entitlement to store opening. MMA was hired by CVS/pharmacy in 1997, to be part of a 5-year, 1500 store roll-out program that would include 34 architectural firms. MMA was assigned to develop all the new stores in New York City and the tri-state area. Most projects required development of a new store within an existing structure. Our success came from our ability to develop plans that conform to the existing conditions and adapting our solutions accordingly. To-date, we have been involved with over 400 new stores, and pride ourselves on being the only remaining architect of the original 34 firms, still working with CVS.
In 2002, CVS hired MMA to design a new National Prototype store that would be built across the US. This design established brand identity, and is adaptable to the major regions of the US. After several preliminary designs, MMA finalized the design which focused around an arched truss over the entrance, and the design is easily transformed for each region.
MMA has also been involved with 90 Retail Health Clinics (200 sq.ft. space with 1-2 examination rooms), 44 Pharmacy Expansions, 34 Store Refreshes and 70 Special Projects. In total MMA has developed more than 580 projects for CVS and this number continues to grow rapidly.
MMA was selected by Stop & Shop to be one of their regional architects to help roll out their future Stop & Shop, Giant and Super Giant Food Supermarkets. The stores range in size from 50,000 to 85,000 square feet which includes a three thousand square foot mezzanine. To date, MMA has been involved with 16 stores in both New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia.
Most recently, MMA was involved in the preparation of a full set of constructions documents for a new Super Giant Supermarket in West Fredericksburg, Virginia. MMA’s scope of work included preparation of feasibility studies/due diligence reports, schematic design, design development, contract documents, bidding and negotiations, and construction administration.
MMA was also involved in the redevelopment of the prototype details and elevations.
MMA was named Architect of Record for Albertson’s/Acme Supermarkets in 1999 and was been involved in 19 different projects. Acme prefers to develop new designs for each of their new stores based on the community it is located in. MMA visited the surrounding communities and developed an innovative contemporary design that compliments the surrounding areas. The exterior materials also tie into to the nearby local town which tends to be more traditional in design.
These projects include supermarkets ranging from 38,500 to 67,500 square feet, convenience stores, fuel centers and carwashes. All building types are free standing buildings with varying façades.
The Middletown, Delaware store was a new 60,000 sq. ft. supermarket with a convenience stores, fuel centers and carwashes.
The Centerville, Maryland project consisted of a new 38,500 square foot supermarket as well as the design of a new 8 pump fuel center, convenience store and car wash. The exterior of the supermarket was designed by MMA.
In 2004, MMA was retained by Office Depot to help develop various new stores throughout the Northeastern United States. To-date, MMA has been responsible for developing the new stores in Maryland and Virginia as well as preparing site surveys for facilities in New Jersey.
Services that MMA has provided include site evaluation and survey reports, field surveying, schematic designs, design development, construction documents, bidding and negotiations, construction administration, and permitting.
MMA was hired by Liz Claiborne Inc. to help develop various new outlet stores throughout the US, predominantly along the Eastern Seaboard. Initially, MMA was given the responsibility to develop new outlet stores for both Liz Claiborne as well as Ellen Tracy, Dana Buchman and Juicy Couture, located in the Northeast, Florida and Texas. Upon successful completion of the first 5 stores, we were given additional newly acquired brands to the Liz Claiborne Company which included Kate Spade, DKNY and Lucky. Successful completion of over 45 stores across the country were designed, coordinated, and completed in an approximate one year span by MMA for the 9 different Liz Claiborne Brands being rolled out at the time. MMA was hired by Rite Aid Pharmacy to help develop over eighty new stores in the five boroughs of New York City. MMA was responsible for developing the new stores in Brooklyn and Queens and over eighteen months MMA designed and managed the construction of over thirty new stores. Twenty nine of them were new stores in existing structures and one was a new prototype ground up building.

As with the CVS projects, these projects were difficult projects due to the nature and condition of the existing buildings. Services provided included, site evaluation and survey reports, field surveying, schematic designs, design development, construction documents, bidding and negotiations, construction administration, permitting and expediting, tax abatements, and close out.
MMA was the architect for Volvo’s new 38,000 square foot automobile dealership located on 2.7 acres. The two story, 21,000 square foot interior showroom is connected by a custom stainless steel elevator. Upstairs, overlooking the showroom, is a 5,000 square foot office space. The building had a poured in place foundation with masonry bearing walls, masonry veneer, metal frame, curtain wall, built-up roof systems, and exterior insulated finishing systems.
Due to site restrictions, MMA designed the service area to be below grade, to include vehicle storage areas as well as 17 state-of-the-art service bays.
