PS958 Primary School (K-5)

Client: NYC SCA
Location: Brooklyn, NY

PS958 is a brand new 404-seat capacity Primary School located at 840 5th Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. Serving the Sunset Park neighborhood in Brooklyn, the new primary school hosts up to 404 students from Kindergarten through 5th grade.  Located at the corner of 5th Avenue and 36th Street across from historic Green-Wood Cemetery, the new school stands at four stories plus cellar, totaling 62,000 SF.  Site excavation began in December 2018 and school opened in September 2022.

The school property slopes significantly towards one corner of the site, creating an opportunity for a unique “sunken playground” accessible from the lower level dining area. This playground serves the Kindergarten students, with a larger primary playground on grade.  A flexible Multi-Purpose space on the fourth floor serves as the primary Gymnasium as well as Auditorium with raised stage.  Extensive use of precast concrete at the exterior shell not only complements the design aesthetic, but also streamlines the construction process, saving time and money for the client.
