MMA was tasked with finding a home for the growing student population of Burlington City and was presented with a site that many thought could not accommodate a new school. Upon completion of the Existing Conditions Assessment (ECA) of the old WWIS, and evaluating the District’s LRFP, MMA determined that the current facility would not be able to handle future enrollment and would need to be replaced. Our solution involved the demolition of the existing and deteriorating school, which housed grades four through six (4-6). The new 103,637 sf school would house grades (3-6) as well as the Board of Education offices.

The new facility now faces the main thoroughfare in the District and is surrounded by a small, closely knit, residential fabric. By way of strategic site improvements, MMA’s design enables children to filter out of the building and into play areas without the hazards of urban traffic.
